State-wide Landslide Planning Map (Landslide Hazard Bands)

A state-wide Landslide Planning Map has been produced by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC) as part of the Mitigating Natural Hazards through Land Use Planning project. It is intended to produce state-wide hazard banding maps for a number of natural hazards in Tasmania.

The purpose of the Landslide Planning Map is to guide the planning process in regard to the need, or otherwise, for a geotechnical risk management report so as to mitigate the risk of landslide to the community.

The whole of Tasmania has been categorised into five Landslide Hazard Bands that are based on MRT's regional mapping programmes (the Tasmanian Landslide Map Series) and slope categories for those parts of the state that have not been mapped. The Landslide Planning Map was produced in extensive consultation with MRT.

The Landslide Planning Map, and the positions of hazard bands relative to properties, can be viewed on The LIST website. To view the `Landslide Planning Map - Hazard Bands', click Layers then Add Layer from the `Geology and Soils' category (`Landslides' sub-category).

The Landslide Planning Map is a derived planning product and involved a translation process from the scientific maps produced by MRT into a map designed for planning purposes. Therefore, it should be noted that there are differences between the Landslide Hazard Banding that is shown on the Landslide Planning Map and the maps of the Tasmanian Landslide Map Series. The Landslide Planning Map is used to initiate a process of geotechnical risk assessment and management through the planning process, whereas the scientific maps of the Tasmanian Landslide Map Series are designed to inform the risk assessment process (at a regional scale).

Documents relating to the development of the state-wide Landslide Planning Map and the Landslide Hazard Bands are available from the DPAC website, including the Landslide Planning Report, which details the translation process from the landslide science into planning policy.
