Rehabilitation at Hogans Road

Rehabilitation earthworks and revegetation, funded through forfeited bonds, were completed on a cancelled mining lease (ML 34M/1993) at Hogans Road in northeast Tasmania.

To reduce risks to public safety and create a stable landform, existing stockpiles and loose material were used to reduce quarry face heights, forming a slope, in compliance with the Quarry Code of Practice 2017. Earth bunds and drainage controls, including retention ponds, were constructed in order to limit erosion and reduce impacts of acid seepage on the downstream environment. Alkaline shells, a waste product from the marine industry, were spread along the drainage channel and mixed with any potentially acid-forming material to improve future water quality leaving the site.

Spreading of available topsoil and slash and ripping of the quarry floor was completed to assist in native seed germination and growth. Seed selection was determined based on the species present in neighbouring vegetation communities. A mixture of native seed, sawdust, and fertiliser was directly applied over the 1.25-hectare area.

Following revegetation works, a drone flight was conducted in order to provide a comparison to the previous landscape, assess rehabilitation outcomes, and monitor erosion.
