Mineral Resources Tasmania

Mornington Core Library

Mineral Resources Tasmania operates a library with a difference – we store the drill core generated by mineral exploration in Tasmania, along with rock samples and historic collections, at a facility located in Mornington.

Our collection contains material from the early years of mining and prospecting in Tasmania, right up to the present Exploration Drilling Grant Initiative (EDGI).

Our facilities allow for the viewing and sampling of these materials by mining industry, national and international universities, and other research entities. We offer rock and core cutting facilities, access to associated geological databases, and tables for viewing.

All materials are archived and stored in a manner that best preserves the unique value of these assets for the future interests and benefit of the state of Tasmania, in accordance with the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995.

Legislation - the holder of a license or a lease is required to record and lodge drill hole samples as specified under Part 6 of the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995. The licensee or lessee must obtain the approval of the Director of Mines/Chief Geologist prior to any drill core being discarded. The relevant legislation can be viewed at http://www.thelaw.tas.gov.au.

The submission of drill core and cuttings must be in accordance with Part 6 of the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995. If you are intending to deposit core at the Mornington Core Library, please ensure you are familiar with the requirements, which can be found in our Drill Core Submission and Delivery Procedures document.
