Drill core and sample delivery

Delivery of core samples, cuttings or rock chips to the Mornington Core Library  is a relatively straight-forward process:

  1. Complete the Appropriate Submission Form and email to info@mrt.tas.gov.au.
  2. You will be contacted once approval is obtained from the Chief Geologist.
  3. For Drill core Submission, the delivery must be arranged with a minimum of two weeks’ notice unless otherwise organised and 24 hours’ notice of exact delivery day.

Delivery Guidelines - Drill Core

  1. Drill Core must be delivered in commercial trays, not exceeding 1075 mm in length, in a good and safe condition.

ENSURE metal trays are riveted, have ledges to enable grip, proper folds for strength, and number of compartments MUST BE APPROPRIATE to ensure tray weights can be safely managed. Flimsy, spot-welded trays of poor quality WILL NOT be accepted.

  2. Core in the tray must run in the one direction, front left to right, with drill hole name, tray number and depth interval, clearly marked on the front of the tray.
  3. Indicators of down hole direction such as depth markers and arrows should be clearly marked, including those that indicate core loss and End of Hole (EOH) must be clearly marked
  4. Pallets must be non-hire standard industrial pallets (1160 mm x 1160 mm x 150 mm) that are intact and in good condition, with trays stacked in a sequential order and limited to an approximate height of 800 - 900 mm for stability and safe manual handling.
  5. Pallets should be shrink wrapped, with steel strapping or industrial grade plastic strapping, securing the trays to the pallet, in accordance with the National Transport Commissions Load Restraint Guide found at www.ntc.gov.au. Your carrier will also be able to assist you with these requirements.
  6. If Core has been identified to contain Asbestos extra precautions must be taken – shrink wrapped then a plastic cover to the trays and then another layer of shrink wrapping is to be used and your carrier should be informed. Pallets must be strapped as above after shrink wrapping.

A well-packed and wrapped core palate.

Delivery Guidelines - Drill Cuttings and/or Chip Trays

  1. Drill Cuttings should be delivered washed and dried and presented in heavy duty plastic bags ziplocked or zip tied, plastic vials (70 mm diameter max), or 20 compartment clear chip trays, 500 mm x 30 mm x 48 mm.
  2. Individual chip trays should be labelled on the end with hole number and tray number and on the side with the hole number and depth interval for the entire tray. The sample number and/or depth should also be recorded on the inside of the lid (as illustrated below). Bags and vials should indicate the Drill Hole name and the depth interval as required with the Drill core trays, described above.
  3. Bags, chip trays and vials should be securely boxed to contain material during transport.

Delivery Guidelines – Rock Samples

  1. All samples need to be accompanied by a “Sample Submission” form with full details of location, date collected, who collected it and any other information available.
  2. If Samples are suspected to have Asbestos these must be double bagged in thick 100 micron Ziploc bags and clearly indicated in the accompanying “Sample Submission” form.
