A recent field visit and exchange of ideas with researchers from the University of Maryland may herald exciting outcomes.

Professor Sarah Penniston-Dorland, Assistant Professor Megan Newcombe, Kathleen Stepien and Kathryn Bickerstaff from the University of Maryland, USA, recently visited Tasmania following an invitation to collaborate with MRT's Ralph Bottrill. Their research focuses on earthquakes, volcanoes and vectoring toward precious metals deposits.

The team, guided by Ralph, collected garnets from several locations around Tasmania and visited MRT's core library in order to gather core samples for their study. The group also visited mines, including Kara, where they found unique specimens with high water concentration and four distinct stages of mineralisation.
