Utilising machine learning to fingerprint Tasmanian volcanic facies

This recently published paper describes the results of an ARC-Linkage Project, in which MRT was a participant, which used machine learning to generate crystal size distribution (CSD) data from phenocrysts in dacitic to rhyolite rocks from the Mount Read Volcanics (MRV). Correlation of volcanic facies in the MRV has always been difficult, and by using CSD’s the study was able to demonstrate there are multiple dacitic bodies in what had previously been considered to be continuous units in two areas.
